The Role of Failure in the Creative Process
or why that messy sketch could be the best thing you've ever made.
Why do people avoid failing?
People are scared of it. I mean, failing IS in fact scary.
Putting a bunch of effort into something just for it to amount to absolutely nothing—that can break you.
But here’s the thing: failing happens. To everyone.
If there were no risk of failing, no difficulty, then life itself would be boring.
So yeah, failure is necessary.
Necessary because you learn from it.
You wouldn’t do the exact same thing twice—unless, well, to put it plainly, you’re not bright.
If you’re creating anything—design, art, stories—you will fail.
Multiple times. Over and over again.
And THAT, is a good thing.
Failure Is a Sort Of Feedback (A painful critique)
Failing is painful. It hits so hard—and it’s not something you will forget.
It stays with you forever.
But as painful as it gets, your only real option is to learn from it and push harder the next time.
You take what you’ve learned, iterate, and you run it back.
People who’ve built successful businesses—they didn’t get it right on the first try.
They failed. Over and over.
Each failure taught them something.
They took all they learned and built a Personal Playbook—something unique to them, shaped by their experiences, their scars and all.
Same thing applies when you’re creating.
Designing. Writing. Building.
You learn → iterate → fail → and repeat.
That loop is where the magic happens.
Eventually, you land on something is insane, in the best way.
Failing Is A Growth Catalyst
In chemistry i think, a catalyst is a sort of activator, a causer, a pre-defined element that sparks into something else..
Failing is a catalyst for growth. EVERY SINGLE SUCCESSFUL PERSON HAS FAILED, a lot of epic fails at that, its almost like a rite of passage, you need to fail to be successful. Every time you mess up, you get better, you know exactly what to avoid next time, if you let failure stop you, if you give up because of one failure, that when the damage will take real effect. Quitting kills potential, quitting has stopped the talented from taking over their industry. Quitting is the enemy not failing.
Embrace it, Embrace Failure
The thing is, failure cannot be dealt with overnight, you HAVE to accept it, learn from it and move on. You need to understand that every failed attempt is not a reflection of your ability — it is part of your journey. Each failure makes you better and closer to success.
The beginning of every new creative task or project, its easy to stare at the blank canvas and feel scared of failing, of creating something short of amazing. Eventually, you’d get to a point where it becomes part of your flow, your practice.
Failing won’t feel like the end of the world, it’ll be part of the process, the process that eventually gets where you need to go.
Fail Smart — Fail Fast
I don’t mean fail intentionally, all you need to do is eliminate the fear of failure, the fear of losing, because you now know you will learn from whatever happens, you take risks, experiment, and figure out what doesn’t work quickly, so you can iterate, and be conscious of what you’re learning along the way. Analyze - Reflect -Iterate and then ship something wonderful or pivot to another idea or story worth sharing
It’s simple really, the sooner you fail, the sooner you succeed.
Failure is A Stepping Stone
Failure is not the enemy, Quitting is. Failure is part of the process, the sooner you come to terms with that fact, the sooner growth and evolution becomes a reality.
Growth comes from failure, and if you are not failing enough, you are probably not taking enough risks.
Do not fear failure, embrace it, use its power to build — evolve, learn from it, iterate, and keep pushing. Failure is the reason why you may create something amazing.
Let your mistakes shape you (character development type shii), and create an evolved version of a creator.
